Bronica S2a Serial Numbers

Posted on -

I have a bronica which I purchased as a model S2, but it has an all-black film advance crank, which I read that was on the S2A. Theserial number is 75xxx. I think it would be more likely thatsomeone would replace a film crank than the body plate where theserial number is. However, since the S2A had a re-designed film-transport mechanism, it is possble that the crank from an S2A wouldnot fit the S2.-The reason I am asking: The film advance makes a terrible squealjust at the completion of the rotation.

The shutter fires correctly, and everything else works on the camera, but I thought this was asign of a gearing problem. Then I read that the S2a has a mechanismwhich protects the gearing from over-zealous cranking. So the sound Iam hearing might be the s2A mechanism.Any help is appreciated. Darin-I believe you have an S2.

If your neck-strap lugs look like this.you don't have 'S2A' in your serial number, then you have an S2.If your neck strap lugs are longer and don't have the 'butterfly wings' AND your serial number is an S2A number greater than 150037, then you have an S2A.Note that Bronica used different serial numbering conventions throughout the models. S2's had these formats:CB50., CB53., CB55., CB57., CB60., CB74., CB75., CB78.S2A's were of these formats:CB9.S2A, CB10.s2A, CB11.S2, CB15., CB16., CB17.I've never had the squeal you describe on either my S2 or S2A, but both of them (and every other S2/S2A I've handled) has a large increase in tension just before you're finished winding the film/cocking the shutter. According to everything I've read, this is by design.Dave.
