Here's the skinny on the translation patch, since the original thread turned into a bit of a mess.Q: What is this?A: An English translation patch for the Samurai Spirits RPG.Q: What platform is this going to be on?A: Neo.Geo CD only.Q: What about the Saturn and PSX versions?A: I don't have the means to hack/translate either. The NeoCD is the best of the three, anyway.Q: Is there going to be a cost?A: No. The patch will be completely free of charge. If you are so inclined, however, you are welcome to donate by going here (No compensation is expected, though it is always appreciated.Q: Is this compatible with Neo.Geo CD emulators?A: Partially. The only version of Nebula that I can personally attest to working is 2.23a. It runs fine in NeoCD/PSP, as well.Q: Which versions of the Neo.Geo CD will it work with?A: The original front loading and top-loading 1x systems can be used without issue. For a CDZ, you will need to further patch the ISO to get around the copy protection.Q: How do I do that?A: I don't know, and the answers will not be provided in this FAQ.

Originally, for technical reasons, I had to leave them out of the Mizuki chapter. The text is precisely timed to display as the voices are heard, and the dialogue boxes are advanced automatically. So with the change to English text, I have to adjust the speed commands accordingly, or it falls out of sync, and everything comes off wrong.

A: Because the name of the series is 'Samurai Shodown' outside of Japan. The translated name of this game will reflect that.Q: But isn't 'Samurai Spirits RPG' the actual title of the game?A: No, the original title is 'Shinsetsu Samurai Spirits: Bushidou Retsuden.' This translates more or less to 'A new take on Samurai Spirits: A set of bushido stories.'

Q: How accurate is the translation going to be?A: This patch is going to be done up properly. The only Romaji you're going to see is for proper names, like for people and places, and words that have been appropriated into English, like samurai, katana and dojo.

Movenames will be translated to English. You will not see any uses of Japanese honorifics. No -chan, -kun, -sama or any of that. No, I will not change my mind on this, and no, I will not do an alternate version.Q: But it's not accurate if it's not full of Japanese words!A: Then play it without the patch.

Well, the paths through both chapters are relatively the same regardless of the 'main' character you pick. Both chapters have pretty much the same story, but it is played through the point of view of the 'main' character you picked. The 'main' character also has a small part of the story devoted to them exclusively somewhere in each of the 2 scenarios. The 'main' character you pick also has an effect as to what other 'main' characters and secondary characters you can pair up with.

For example, using Genjuro as a main character is unique in that he pairs up with nobody, and fights alone.The ending for the Amakusa chapter is unique for each main character, but I THINK the Mizuki ending follows relatively the same route, except that of course it is played through your character's point of view, so the conversations would likely be different. Tedium, basically. Also, the timing program can't be used at my work, which is where I tended to get all of the script translation work done. The project isn't dead. It's just on a short hold, while I get some games off my to-play list and relax. No idea since my webpage is dead. Not that it would matter if it would take a few days or weeks, though i heard its easy, so great news:smirk:.The old one I have on UnderGround Gamer has the patches of all the games for NeoCD ingame protection with all the CDZ files cracked also. It shouldnt take very long to crack the ingame protection after Deuce is done with the patch. Ive been working on building a mini theatre at home and redoing the rest of the house as well so Ive been extra busy so as long as that doesnt get in the way the game should be cracked overnight once the final patch is in my hands. Oh and the CDZ cracked file from the old kit of mine should still work fine as that file is not being patched for any reason as far as I can tell. So in the end only the ingame protection will need to be cracked once Deuce is done with his English patch.;).

I've translated several games, and seeing the casual indifference (or worse, occasional piracy-profiteering) that comes of such freely-given hard work has given me pause more than a few times. But I kept going. In the end, I can't afford for it to be about anyone but me. The work I do, I do for the personal satisfaction. That's going to require some doing, and some assistance from a friend who's far more CD-ROM tech-savvy than I. Hopefully, one will be able to pop in an original CD and run the patch EXE, which will then create (or maybe directly burn?) a playable image. Plus there's the ever-present question of the datatrack-only patch.

Regardless, the CD image will have to be rebuilt. No two ways about that, as the sizes for many of the data files are not the same (so PPFs and the like won't work). Up through the first major boss encounter, which puts the Mizuki chapter at maybe 15% timed (but not tested). Hopefully, the method being used will be mostly foolproof. Well, folks, I have some bad news. Not catastrophic news, though it feels like it to me at the moment.:P Don't worry, there's no 'mysterious HD crash' or anything like that. Just a stupid mistake that ballooned into a massively stupid mistake.The voice timing, which I was projecting to have finished last night, has hit a major snag. As it turns out, one of the calculations used to determine the durations of the original Japanese lines was off. This means that I've got to do some research, figure out exactly how far off it is, if there are any other variables involved, and then error-check/correct the entire Mizuki chapter script's timing.To say I'm not thrilled about this is putting it mildly.

Hopefully, it won't push back my intended release date, but right now, just thinking about it puts me in a horrible mood. You have to sift through a whole lot of garbage before you find anything of value. Is the timing you're doing anything like subtitle timing for DVD or other video?

If the one specified isn't preloaded into memory, it simply won't appear. Is the number of ticks (1 tick = 1/60th of a second) to wait before displaying the next character of text.

Note that it always takes 1 tick to display a character, and the value starts at 0. So actually means 'take the normal 1 tick to display the character, then wait six ticks before displaying the next one.' As is, that command sets the speed to 6 ticks between each character until the system is told otherwise. On its own means 'wait exactly ten ticks, or 1/6th of a second.'

And together are used for an extended pause. For instance:This means take the decimal value 24, add it to the current decimal value of the current speed, and pause for that long before proceeding.

(This took a long time to figure out, and is one of the main reasons I'm having to re-time all of this stuff).Anytime there is an assigned speed other than, the game auto-advances the text window. Otherwise, control of advancing the window is up to the player.

So when a speech is over, it always ends with.Make sense? I believe I understand.Since the timing is based on character by character advancement, not only are all the timings progressive, but synchronization also requires that they be adjusted differently for each chunk of dialog because the duration is directly affected by the number of characters. So if a line of dialog needs to last two seconds and has 50 characters you have to divide the number of characters into 120 ticks and use the result (rounded down to 2) as the second argument in the tag.

And since you have to use integers, you also have to pad out the leftover ticks (20) with timed pauses. The enigmatic Guest over on the Aeon Genesis forums wrote a script extractor/inserter, which is my primary tool. I had to then view the sprite file containing the font, apply the right palette, and adjust it to be readable. Once I figured that out, I was able to use the PHP application known as FEIDIAN to extract the whole mess to one huge BMP file. But basically, what I did was find the file that contained the very first line from Ukyo's intro, and replaced it with an in-order series of commands to display every single character in the font. Since the original font was 16x16 pixels, the text window allowed for 16x2 characters per screen. Took tons of screenshots, and had to manually transcribe each one of those characters to a table file, to match the corresponding Kanji to its appropriate hex value.This process has to be done for most non-official translations in some form or another, but for SSRPG it was pretty tedious, as the Kanji table was over 1500 entries long.

Katakana, hiragana, the whole Roman character set, and hundreds of Kanji (several of which are somewhat archaic and not in common use anymore). Each had to be manually figured out and put into Shift-JIS for the table. Once the table was complete, then when you run the script dumper, instead of getting nothing but a bunch of hex values like all run together, you get a shift-JIS text file. Then you figure out which ones are control codes, like and and and and and all that.The script dumper still works, even without a complete table. But with the table intact, you'll get this:うおおおぉぉぉぉぉしゃあ助太刀するぞ!Instead of every single item in and every SJIS character being a hex or decimal value like the. I had to then build an English table to work from. And since the font routine wasn't hacked, I was still restricted to 16x16 tiles.

In order to get around this, I had to put together every possible combination of 8x16 letters and appropriate symbols in the available space. Less of an issue than it might otherwise be, since the Kanji table was so big to start with. But it does limit my options with certain subtleties of the script, since there's no way to print a single character without another character next to it (even if it's just a space).And all that's just for getting the script to display English text. Doesn't even cover translation. Or the work done on the title screen, or the hex editing required to get the intro looking right. Or the FIX graphic edits to make the combat menus non-Kanji.

And finally half a second pause before the final one. I imagine it could be irritatingly tedious to pick those sections out of the translation and change the addressing for those, but it would give you greater control over the dialog appearance. Would there just be too many of those for that to be feasible?

If all goes well, I'm hoping that you'll be able to put in your original CD, run the patch EXE, it reads it, extracts the whole thing, patches the files it needs to, and writes the entire patched ISO to a file (or more ideally, to a new disc). The translation will just break it and cause it not to boot at all. This is not intentional on my part; it's just a simple fact. I'm going to have the patcher check for the CDZ-patched files and halt if it finds them, with an error message explaining that it needs the original, unmodified files from the CD in order to proceed.

I don't want to deal with a bunch of people who can't/won't/are too stupid to read a simple readme.txt.This patch WILL NOT BREAK ANY FORM OF COPY PROTECTION. The copyright on the game is still valid, and will remain so for another 60 or so years. I'm not going to deliberately place myself in a legally actionable position, just to save some folks on the internet a little bit of frustration and/or work.And as I've already requested, I would prefer there be no open discussion of how to get around said copy protection once the patch is applied, nor any of the patched files be hosted anywhere. The only form in which this translation will be made available will be the patcher itself, which will perform the necessary modifications and (if things go according to plan) build a new ISO.

Ruoska rates this game: 3/5Decent 16-bit RPG, the only one on the NeoGeo. Nowhere near the Squaresoft greats of the era (Chrono, Mana, FF, Rudra, THG, FM1st) but not bad either. The game has three scenarios and lets you pick a party from the Samurai Shodown/Spirits characters. Very typical old school grindy gameplay.

Turn-based combat and all that. Neat graphics and music, but slightly annoying loading times due to the NGCD system. Not really worth the time and effort, especially since the game is Japanese only and there is no translation available. I finished all the scenarios with the help of a FAQ back in the day and haven't touched the game since.
